Simple Changes #79
Engage on a theme rather than a specific policy
Problem
The Community Life survey (2016-17) found that across the UK only 27% of adults agreed they could personally influence decisions whilst 58% stated that it was important to be able to influence decisions. Sometimes, the way we host conversations with the public is ‘off-putting’, or fails to get to what really matters to them.
Simple Change
To demonstrate good involvement, you should try engaging the public on a theme or a topic in a way that is relevant to them, rather than exclusively in a policy context.

Engage on a theme rather than a policy
Giving people the opportunity to engage on things that matter to them and impact their daily lives, can make a big difference to how policies are shaped in the future. Measuring the Mountain hold regular ‘Citizens Jury’ events to allow members of the community to engage on a specific theme. They are encouraging other public bodies to do the same.
